The Hidden Torah of Shavuot - The Gates of Gratis Kindness

BH

Prior to the receiving of the Torah at Mt. Sinai on the 6th of Sivan - which includes the emphasis of fulfilling the Mitzvot of the Torah - the world existed without the Torah for a total of 26 generations (from Adam to Moshe).

The question is: if the Torah is our life and sustenance (as we say every day in the morning Sh'ma blessing), how is it that the world could have even existed without the Torah? And yet, the Torah was already in existence before the Creation, and Hashem even used it as His blueprint for Creation. So where was the Torah during this time period before the receiving of the Torah on Mt. Sinai?

The Torah was there but in a very hidden format. The culmination of the entire Torah are the 10 Commandments which were hidden within the 10 Utterances (listed in the depiction of the Creation in Bereishit), which are the makeup of the entire Creation. Since the Torah is life itself, and without it there is no life at all, the Torah then was sustaining in a hidden way all of mankind - gratis. Without earning it, the entire world was sustained through Hashem's endless kindness found within the Hidden Torah.

The same is true today. After having already received the Torah, those who have no affiliation whatsoever with the Torah and it's observance - i.e. the gentiles, the wicked, the simpletons - receive gratis their life source and sustenance from this Hidden Torah. Even the Torah scholar himself, when detached from the Torah and involved in his mundane, physical necessities, must also receive from this Hidden Torah too.

But the question is: if everyone anyways receives life and vitality from the Hidden Torah, then why spend time learning the "Revealed" Torah - with all of it's mitzvah components - given at Mt. Sinai?

Or better yet, if even the "wicked" also receive vitally from the Hidden Torah, why even work hard at becoming a Tzaddik and a good person?

The truth is, that access today to this unearned kindness of life-force and sustenance of the Hidden Torah is only accessible to the Tzaddikim of the greatest caliber. And these tzaddikim, out of their own good will, give over the bounties of the Hidden Torah to the entire world, even if undeserving. Thus, in truth, a wicked person has no merit to receive life from the Hidden Torah (i.e. he may be undeserving, but he is also damaging). It is just that the Tzaddik has the power and ability to give all levels of undeserving people from this life force.

Because the nature of the Hidden Torah is for the undeserving - i.e. gratis - these Tzaddikim must purposely lower themselves into being a "simple person" for the Hidden Torah to kick-in.

However, there are levels of "how much" an unaffiliated and simple person can receive this vitality and life of the Hidden Torah through  the Tzaddik. This is determined by how much a person is close to the Torah and the Tzaddikim. By learning the Revealed Torah along with coming close to the Tzaddikim, this enables a person to receive much more vitality from the Hidden Torah when necessary.

More than this, the concept of hope no matter how dark and severe the situation comes from this Hidden Torah too.

With this, we can understand the rabbinical teaching that Hashem left room for Moshe to decide that the giving of the Torah should take place on the 6th of Sivan and not on the 5th.
The difference between the 5th and 6th day is in perspective of what day of the Omer-counting it is. The 5th of Sivan is the 49th day of the Omer counting. The number 49 is a multiple of 7. 7 corresponds to the culmination of all Torah study. 6 corresponds to the 6 sections of the Mishnah, which, when developed, includes the entire corpus of the Written and Oral Torahs. 7 - like Shabbat - corresponds to the esoteric and mystical part of the Torah - Zohar and Kabbalah. 50, however, corresponds to a level of Torah from a totally different ballgame - the Hidden Torah.

Hashem left it up to Moshe to decide to give the Torah on the 50th day - the 6th of Sivan.

This is because Hashem intentionally made it that only Moshe could tap into the Hidden Torah and activate it to sustain all of the undeserving factions of humanity. Only the Tzaddik, when being a totally simple person, can receive this life sustenance from the Hidden Torah.
Thus, Shavuot, is both the receiving of the Revealed Torah from Hashem and the Hidden Torah through Moshe (and all subsequent Tzaddikim who are at the caliber of Moshe).

May we come ever closer to the Torah and to the Tzaddikim, and thus receive more and more undeserved vitality and gratis life from the Hidden Torah.

QUEEN ESTHER - The Power of Sarah

The connection between Queen Esther and the Matriarch Sarah is drawn out through the number 127.

The Midrash teaches that Rebbi Akiva told his students: "Why did Achashverosh merit to rule over 127 nations? Since Esther, a descendant of Sarah who lived 127 years, was destined to be the queen over his entire kingdom.

Through this, the Midrash shows that there is a special connection between Sarah and Queen Esther.
*

Sarah, Rashi explains, connotes rulership (
שררה in Hebrew). And since any type of ruler expresses his/her command through speech, Sarah, the wife of Avraham - who was the first to seek out and reveal Hashem's presence and providence in the world, thus connotes the embodiment of pure and holy speech. It is for this reason that when Pharaoh took her to be with him, she simply "ordered" the angel to attack Pharaoh, to which he complied.

Since the letters of speech are the building blocks with which Hashem used to create the universe, they are thus the life-support and nourishment of everything in the creation, including that which is evil.

Due to this, the evil in creation tries its most to gain more and more nourishment and sustenance from the power of speech.

The Kabbalah teaches that the embodiment of evil is coined as the three officials of Pharaoh, Pharaoh himself, and the land of Egypt.

The three officials of Pharaoh - the wine steward, the chief baker, and the chief butcher, correspond respectively to the trachea (windpipe), the esophagus (food-pipe), and the jugular veins which are all responsible for the food intake and effects in the body (the windpipe regulates cool air in the blood system so that the heat generated by the heart does not dehydrate the body of its liquids (i.e. corresponding to the wine steward), while the jugular veins regulate the blood drainage to and from the head which is mainly responsible for the lust and desire in a person to eat that which is not necessary for survival (i.e. corresponding to the chief butcher)).

These three conduits are located in the neck with the nape behind them. The nape - HaORePh in Hebrew - has the same letters as PhaRAoH.

The throat, the narrowest part of the body, corresponds to Egypt-Mitzrayim. Mitzrayim is rooted in the word Meitzar, which connotes narrowness.

To explain: since the 5 sections of speech (gutturals, laterals, etc.) are located also in the throat area, the 3 officials of Pharaoh try to, so-to-speak, "trap" a person's speech by getting him to overindulge in eating improperly, which explains the juxtaposition of the eating and speech mechanisms both being in the throat area. Since food is the main force in creation which joins soul and body together, it goes to say that the sparks of holy speech contained within food (also because food produces energy which is later used to speak words of praise and thanks to Hashem) are extremely powerful and resourceful to the realm of evil.

Once trapped these three officials give over this "speech-energy" to Pharaoh their ruler, located in the nape. This gives Pharaoh full authority over this potentially holy speech which he then uses to rule over Mitzrayim, the tightness of the throat.

All this results in that a person loses his power of holy speech which is reflected in his inability to properly call out and pray to Hashem. With this inability, a person then becomes dejected and depressed over the fact that he needs major salvation in life through prayer, but is unable to even open his mouth to ask Hashem of the salvation needed.

*
To get out of this situation the force of "Sarah" is needed. Sarah - which is holy and pure speech - receives this title through her ability of renewal. As Rashi explains, when she was 100 she was like 20 (in beauty), and when she was 20 she was like 7 (free of sin). This concept of going "backwards" is the concept of renewal, whereby a person always starts again.

This renewal gives a person a freshness that specifically renews ones faith/emunah. With emunah in check, a person is more aware and careful of the quality and quantity of food consumption, thus breaking the clutches of Pharaoh's three "henchmen".

Renewal is also the concept of fasting/refraining/diet in that a person uses energy from "beforehand" in order to function at the present time.

Once weakened, the holy force called Sarah now enters the domain of Pharoah's "Egypt/MItzrayim" unhindered. Since the evil side always lurks to leech off the energy of holy speech, they are more than happy to welcome Sarah into their domain. However, this is to their detriment, as the holy force of Sarah then extracts and releases all traces of holiness and holy speech trapped therein due to previous blemishes in eating. This results in a recognition of Hashem as ruler by people from all walks of like (who were until now fooled into a secular, mundane life due to the influence of Pharaoah and his Egypt) and their coming to worship Hashem in line with the faith of the Jewish nation, Hashem's Chosen people.

This is all reflected in the biblical narration of the descent of Avraham and Sarah into Egypt during a famine, the capture of Sarah by the "officials" of Pharaoh, and her being taken to Pharaoh's palace to cohabit with him, the infliction of Pharaoh and his household, and then the leaving of Avraham and Sarah with abundant wealth from Pharaoh.

The famine connotes a limitation of eating which is also the concept of renewal.

This led to the descent of Avraham and Sarah into Egypt/Mitzrayim, the tightness of the throat. Sarah was then taken captive by the officials of Pharaoh who praised her for being fit to be given to Pharaoh the king - i.e. to trap the spiritual energy of Sarah/speech.

When Pharaoh tried to approach her, the Midrash relates that Sarah prostrated on the ground in prayer, when Hashem sent an angel who at her command striked and inflicted Pharaoh with a severe leprosy. This symbolizes the submission of Pharaoh before Sarah/Holy Speech.

Pharaoh then giving Avraham gifts of gold, silver, donkeys, camels etc. connotes the holy sparks extracted from Egypt/Mitzrayim, only adding to the dominion of Sarah/Holy Speech in the world.

* * *

In the Purim story, the Midrash states that it was Haman who convinced Achashverosh to make a feast of 7 days for the Jews of Shushan. In total 18,544 Jews partook of this feast, eating and drinking way in excess and even of non-kosher products (e.g. the wine was not kosher wine). This was done so as to trap the Jews under the control of Pharaoh's three officials and eventually that of Pharaoh himself and Egypt (note: even though Haman was not part of the Egyptian nation, still the influence and concept of Pharaoh was present in Haman's evil plot to wipe out and destory the Jewish nation - the goal of Pharaoh's purpose in preventing Jews from Holy Speech/Sarah).

Haman himself, as the Talmud teaches, is hinted to in the Torah in the verse regarding the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Bad, where Hashem asks Adam: "HaMIN HaEtz... [could it be that] from the Tree in which I ordered you not to eat from (i.e. the Tree of Knowledge) did you eat (HaMaN and HaMin have the same root letters)? This shows the root of Haman in inproper eating, which as explained above is the key in trapping the force of Holy Speech/Sarah.

Once done the next stage was to get the essence of Sarah/Holy Speech to enter and become trapped in the realm of evil. To do so, Haman concealed his act so that even the evil realm itself should not be fully aware of his secret plot.

This started with his suggestion that Vashti be killed (the majority of opinions hold that Memuchan who suggested the execution of Vashti was actually Haman). Vashti - ושתי - is etymologically symilar to the word ושט - the esophagus (the Hebrew letters ט and ת are interchangable due to their common root in their section of speech - the linguals - דטלנת). By having Vashti killed, he wanted to show that the improper force of eating - the food-pipe had been eradicated, thus preparing for the coming of Sarah/holy speech.

His second suggestion to Achashverosh was to make a general proclamation that every man should be a ruler (Sorrer - שורר in Hebrew which is one with שרה-Sarah) in his home. This second decree made a laughing stock out of Achashverosh since obviously every man rules in his home. However, Haman's deeper intent was to already activate the presence of Sarah/rulership nationwide in order to convince Sarah/Holy Speech that there was no threat and danger in entereing the realm of evil. For this is the way of Haman - to hide the true intent of his ploy even from the realm of evil itself in order to bypass any possible obstructions.

Next, Haman was part of the advisory board who suggested to Achashverosh to find another wife. His overt intention was that Achashverosh should take Haman's daughter in marriage. However his real intent was that Esther - the true symbol of Sarah in that generation, be taken into the realm of holiness.

With the Jews in exile for 70 years, their prostrating to the idol of Nevuchadnezzar, their eating of forbidden foods at the ball of Achashverosh, he hoped to totally subdue once and for all with Sarah/Holy Speech/Esther - the essence of Jewish Faith and Hope.

Once this was accomplished, he could also easily eradicate the Jewish existence with everything that it stood for, mainly the power of prayer.

However, Mordekhai, like Avraham, was one who constantly yearned to spread the awareness of Hashem, His rulership and His Divine Providence in the world. He would not let Esther silently sink away in the palace of Achashverosh, the chamber of evil.

By urging Esther to do something, she requested that the Jews fast for 3 days for her success. By doing so, she activated the Jews subduing the influence of Pharaoh's "3" officials who gained the upper hand at Achashverosh's ball. The fast also renewed the Jewish faith which allowed them to cry out to Hashem in heartfelt prayer.

With this Esther entered into Achashverosh and succeeded in bringing about the downfall of Haman and his evil plot.

As a result, the story of Purim relates that there became world recognition of the greatness of Mordekhai and Esther (i.e. Avraham and Sarah), with many gentiles abandoning their previous way of life, and converting to Judasim (see Esther chap. 9).

May we also merit a modern-day Purim miracle, where Jews all over will sincerely start again with a fresh renewal, and cry out to Hashem to bring them closer, thus activating the presence and awareness of Hashem's Providence throughout the world, leading to an abandoning of all false beleifs and lifestyles, Amen.

Chanukah, Illuminating Rabbi Meir’s Olive

"And you shall eat, be satiated and bless Hashem your Lord over the good Land (i.e. the Holy Land) in which He has given to you" (Devarim 8:10).

Rav Avira stated... the Heavenly angels questioned Hashem regarding a seeming contradiction that appears in the Holy Torah: "On the one hand You wrote - 'I am a Lord who will not show favor [in judgement]' (Devarim 10:17), but on the other hand You also wrote - 'Hashem will show favor to you' (BaMidbar 6:26)? The Holy One answered them: "How can I not show favor to the Jewish people? For I have written in the Torah 'you shall eat, be satiated and [then] bless Hashem your Lord', and yet they already bless me after eating even an olive's worth (approx. 30 grams) and an eggs worth (approx. 60 grams) [which is much less than their being fully satiated]!" (Berakhot 20b).

With this source Rabbi Meir established the law of reciting a blessing after eating just an olive's worth of food (i.e. 30 grams), while Rabbi Yehudah established the blessing only after an egg's worth (i.e. 60 grams). Jewish law rules in accordance to the opinion of Rabbi Meir - an olive's worth.

Since food is what keeps body and soul together, it goes to say that when this act is conducted properly and in balance (i.e. not to overeat) it enables a true existence and perspective in life. Thus an olive's worth (i.e. 30 grams) even though not at all satisfying, is enough already to give the soul productive energy to use in the performance of Mitzvot.

And when after eating even such a minimal intake of food, one then uses this energy to say words of praise and glory to Hashem - this then activates the reciprocal praise and glory that Hashem takes in the Jewish nation. With this, Hashem, as it were, gives over the heavens and earth in their hands so that they can guide and direct nature according to their own will, thus leading to "super-natural" wonders and miracles taking place. This results in people "seeing" the glory and splendor of Hashem hidden behind creation, which is the general attitude and lifestyle of truly living in the Holy Land - the Land of Israel.

(For more insights and development of these ideas, please listen to the following audio series: Likutey Moharan lesson #47)

________

Based on all this, we can understand a more profound insight and depth in the miracle of the Chanukah story, message and festival:

The Menorah served to illuminate the rest of the world with the light and Divine favor that was generated through all of the holy items and devotions performed in the Holy Temple.

This involved the High priest lighting the Menorah daily with pure and untainted "olive" oil. This was specifically used to show and demonstrate to the entire world that the goal of the Holy Temple is basically to reveal Hashem's Divine favor in this mundane world of concealment, and that this can also be achieved on a personal level through minimizing one's food intake to even an "olive's worth", and then to praise Hashem using this energy.

Thus, it was specifically the High priest who lit the olive oil Menorah lamp, since "Hashem will show favor to you" - which is generated by eating and blessing Hashem even after an "olive's worth" - is part of the priestly blessings (above BaMidbar 6:26).

However, the Greeks sought to undermine this glory, trying to take away from the Jewish people their ability to reveal and even "control" Hashem's Divine favor. With their decrees to prevent the Jews from observing Shabbat, sanctifying the New Moon, and performing the Mitzvah of circumcision - 3 events in life which reflect the pride and glory of Hashem in His holy nation - the Greeks hoped to throw the Jews into a spiritual "panic". With this accomplished, they hoped to "stress-out" the Jewish nation, which would eventually affect the quality and quantity of their eating, thus blemishing the "olive's worth" of their sustenance.

This is hinted to in the Hebrew work for Greece - Yavan - which is etymologically similar to quicksand - Yeven Metzula: by making the Jews sink into a spiritual "quicksand", this would cause them to lose control and thus eat whatever and however etc., thus leading to the concealment of Hashem's Divine favor.

Due to this, Matityahu the High priest along with his five sons - all Cohanim/priests - felt the heavy responsibility to restore the nations ability to reactivate Hashem's Divine favor, since it was their responsibility to bless the nation with this blessing (above BaMidbar 6:26).

This led to the "super-natural" victory of this small Macabee/Cohanim army over the massive Greek empire. For these weren't your regular weaponed-trained soldiers! Matityahu and his sons were tzadikkim of the highest caliber totally immersed in the holiness and service of the Holy Temple. Thus they went out to battle with the blessing of "Hashem will show favor to you".

When the victory was won and the Cohanim gained full control again over the Holy Temple, one of the first things they looked for was pure "olive oil" to rekindle again the Menorah. And yes, the next miracle was that they found a container of pure and untainted olive oil sealed with the insignia of the High priest! Since this was the whole purpose of the Temple - to illuminate the world with Divine Favor through Rabbi Meir's "olive's worth" - it was considered a big miracle.

The next miracle was that the olive oil was only enough to kindle the Menorah for one day, yet it continued to burn for a total of 8 days. The number 8 corresponds to the eighth Sefirah (spritual energy from Above) called Hod-Glory. For when Divine Favor is revealed through super-natural miracles this leads to both the glory of Hashem and the Jewish nation to be revealed.

With all this, it is now understood why Torah law states that it is best to use "olive oil" to light the Chanukah candles  - i.e. to reveal Rabbi Meir's "olive's" worth.

For this reason too, the only thing permitted to do with the Chanukah lights is to "look" at them (as opposed to using their light to read a book etc.). This looking is basically "seeing" the revealed glory and splendor of Hashem and the Jewish people which is re-revealed through the Chanukah festival every year.

In line with all this we see why the days of Chanukah are called days of praise and thanksgiving. For with the awareness of the "olive's worth" activated, leading people to become properly concerned and aware of keeping in-check their quality and quantity of eating, this also results in properly praising and thanking Hashem for the sustenance that He gives us.

For this reason also, Torah law states that if words of praise and thanks to Hashem are recited in any meal prepared during the Chanukah festival, it becomes a Mitzvah to partake of that meal - i.e. that the food eaten then is in the category of Rabbi Meir's "olive worth" of food (even though one actually eats more than 30 grams of food during this meal).

May we truly merit this year to connect to the powerful light and awareness generated by the Chanukah candles, and may we be inspired to begin again to enhance the holy quality of our eating, as this is the main means of revealing Hashem's special love to the Jewish nation, Amen.
