Emphasis on Daat
Chassidus is a tool to connect to Hashem. All workmen need tools in order to do their job. Every Jew has been given all sorts of tools, Chochmah, (wisdom) Binah (Knowledge), Daat (Understanding) which enables them to direct their life for Hashem. The difference in chassidus is the emphasis on Daat (Understanding). For the chassid, it is not enough to just perform an act for Hashem, he has to understand it enough to internalize the idea. He has to actually feel what he is doing. In fact, in the eyes of a chassid, if he doesn't actually feel the mitzvah and perform it with joy, too him it is as if he is not really doing it. So, what does he do in order to 'feel' the mitzvah at hand, he meditates both before and after on the purpose of existence. What is that?, 'To know Hashem.'
